Why a mug is a brilliant gift (when you pick it well)

Mugs get a bad rap as gifts. The “Number One Mum” mug. The corporate freebie with a logo on it. The one a coworker brought back from Bali that you’ve never used.

Here’s the thing. A mug is a brilliant gift, IF you pick well.

The mug someone reaches for every morning becomes a small daily joy.

Why mugs work

You use a mug every day. Every. Day. Most other gifts you use once and stash in a drawer. A mug is on the bench, in your hand, near your face for the first quiet ten minutes of the morning. That’s prime real estate.

The right mug becomes the favourite mug. The one that gets reached for over all the others. A small joy that lasts years.

Why most mug gifts fail

Three reasons.

One, the design is generic. “World’s Best Dad” is sweet but it’s also forgettable. Three years later it’s still on the shelf, still unused.

Two, the size is wrong. If your gift recipient drinks long blacks, an 11oz mug will frustrate them. If they sip tea slowly, a 17oz latte cup will go cold half empty.

Three, the material is wrong for them. Camp lover, give them enamel. Office worker, ceramic. School run parent, travel mug.

How to actually pick one

Match the design to the person. Quirky cow design for someone with a sense of humour. Considered illustration for someone with taste. Something that makes them laugh, every morning.

Match the size to the drink. Small for tea drinkers, medium for coffee, large for the latte enthusiasts. There’s a separate post on picking sizes if you want the cheat sheet.

And for goodness sake, get the material right. Ask someone what they actually drink and where.

If you’re shopping for someone in your community (a teacher, a councillor, a small business owner), it’s worth checking your local community marketplace for what local makers are doing. Some of the best gifts come from down the road, and the people getting them know it.

The five designs we make are all on the designs page. Have a look, pick one that matches the person, choose your size on the next page. Done.
